NetPlus had an opportunity to hear from Goss Supply President Andy Goss who runs the business with his father Vice President Terry Goss and sister CFO Stacy Goss-Erwine. We spoke about where our industry is headed, what sparks confidence for the future, and lessons learned along the way.
NETPLUS: Looking back on your history, what’s something critical that you or your predecessors needed to learn, embrace, or overcome to get where you are today?
GOSS: Always listen to what your customers have to say. Read between the lines to draw conclusions to better serve their needs. Understand that it’s not always about making a sale but about coming up with the best possible solution.
NETPLUS: When you look at your team and the current state of things, what gives you confidence in the future of your business or of our industry as a whole?
GOSS: Our team of employees is a mixture of younger and older that are cross trained to do multiple jobs. Having this flexibility and empowerment puts us in a great position to keep offering our customers the best service.
NETPLUS: What’s something you admire about younger generations of workers? What’s something you’d like them to understand?
GOSS: Our younger generation of workers are willing to listen, take criticism, and offer different viewpoints. One thing they need to understand is that knowledge comes with experience, and experience takes time. Retain what you learn and learn something new every day.
NETPLUS: What’s a new practice, system, or technology you’ve embraced in the last 5-10 years, and how has that positively impacted your business?
GOSS: Adding CNC machines and engineering services at our sister company has been a huge help in offering customers a one-stop shop for tackling problems that otherwise may have to go through three or more companies. Offering a streamlined approach for custom products is a growing segment of our business.
NETPLUS: Do you have any predictions for industry trends coming around the corner?
GOSS: Don’t watch the news. Talk to your customers and ask them how their business forecasts look. Each industry is different and subject to ups and downs. Each local economy is going to be different as well. The better you understand your customers’ business, the more informed you will be. Overall, I’m optimistic about the future, even though we are in a time of uncertainty with tariffs and geo-political tensions.
NETPLUS: How do you see your NetPlus membership adding big-picture value to your company not just this year, but for years to come?
GOSS: We have always valued NetPlus since becoming one of the first members. Over the years they have done an excellent job expanding their supplier list and adding partners we’re interested in working with. By engaging and listening to members, NetPlus has continually added value year after year. We expect this trend to continue and are excited to see what the future of NetPlus will bring to its members.
NETPLUS: Any other thoughts on where our industry is headed and how we can best prepare for it?
GOSS: While we are somewhat in a slowdown period, there are always industries that are consistent performers. Always take care of your base, listen to what they have to say, and be prepared to be a problem solver for future opportunities.
